From Virginia with bears

Dozens of bears from Virginia for Newtown.

Dozens of bears from Virginia for Newtown.

These bears came to New Canaan, Conn., — for Newtown — all the way from Virginia. They were dropped off at the New Canaan Mobil station an then taken to the New Canaan Firehouse because Mobil is out of room.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to overwhelming response, we can no longer accept any more stuffed animals. If you wish to help, you can make a financial donation to one or more of the charities listed on our website (to the right).

More bears and notes from across America arrive in Connecticut

This Irish bear came to Connecticut from a family in Pennsylvania.

This Irish bear came to Connecticut from a family in Pennsylvania.

Maria, Matt and Victoria Bartkavage of Orefield, Pa., sent in an Irish-themed bear that arrived on Thursday, Dec. 20. There was a letter attached to the bear that read, in part: “Enclosed you will find a bear for the children. May God bless you and everyone involved in trying to help the children and families of this tragedy.

“Merry Christmas from Maria, Matt and Victoria Bartkavage.”

The Miszko Family of Clifton Park, N.Y., sent a teddy bear with a card that read: “Enclosed is a teddy bear for Operation Fuzzy Wuzzy. Your town and families affected by this tragedy are and will forever be in our thoughts, hearts and prayers.

Teddy bears — and other stuffed animals — for the children of Newtown continue to pile up at the Operation Fuzzy Wuzzy II drop-off locations in Connecticut. From young children bringing one bear at time to businesses and people across the country sending bears in boxes to Connecticut, there has been an outcrying of support since tragedy struck our neighbors in Sandy Hook, Conn.

More than 100 bears arrived in New Canaan on Wednesday afternoon from the children of Greenwich Academy. And Stew Leonard’s four locations in Connecticut and Westchester, N.Y., have seen their bins piling up.

With so many bears coming in — and more on their way — we would like those considering to donate to consider donating at one of the official charities/nonprofits helping out in Sandy Hook and Newtown. We have a list of links on the right side of the page.

The overwhelming support from all over the Nutmeg State and the country has been overwhelming and touching.

Please remember: We can only accept new teddy bears and stuffed animals. Used stuffed animals cannot be given to the children of Newtown.

About Operation Fuzzy Wuzzy II

Operation Fuzzy Wuzzy II is hoping to spread some comfort to the Newtown community by collecting new teddy bears for the children of the town after the Friday, Dec. 14, Sandy Hook Elementary school massacre.

bearsNew Canaan Advertiser parenting columnist and staff writer Julie Butler along with her friend Deborah Johns sprung into action as news of the Newtown school shootings spread that Friday.

They offered help and comfort with Operation Fuzzy Wuzzy II, modeled after the first Operation Fuzzy Wuzzy, which was done to help comfort a town in Russia after a school shooting there. [See story: Community starts up collection of teddy bears for Newtown kids]

The weekend after Christmas, staffers at Hersam Acorn Newspapers, which owns the New Canaan Advertiser, and other volunteers plan to distribute the bears in Newtown.
